Advantage Series How did they determine World Series homefield advantage before the All-Star Game rule?
Was it based on who won the Series the previous year? Or, if it was something like who had the better record, then what if both teams were tied? But what if they had a tied record?
David is close to being right about Fungo being right.
Yes, MLB simply alternated home field between the league champion teams each season. Prior to the 2003 implementation of the current method, World Series home field was not a problem, NEVER a problem.
Anyway... the last season of the alternating plan was 2002, when the AL team, happened to be Anaheim, hosted Games 1, 2, 6*, and 7*. The preceding year, 2001, saw the NL Diamondbacks hosting Games 1, 2, 6*, and 7*. And so on back...
...until the missing 1994 postseason mucked up things. While 1993 had been an AL year (Toronto won at home in six, famously on Carter's home run), MLB properly jumped the gap, and 1995 was an NL year (Atlanta won at home in six). Assigning leagues by odd/even was coincidental, and the strike year flipped the polarity (which, fortunately, was nowhere near as risky as crossing the streams).
