Did anyone else think Slumdog Millionaire was kind of pretentious?

First of all, let me say right off the bat, that I liked Slumdog Millionaire. To repeat, I LIKE SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. I loved the ultra modern directing style, fast paced editing, techno music, and portrayals of poverty in India. So, please, no hater comments. That being said, I think these admirable and academy worthy aspects tended to distract people from the fact that story, social consciousness and good directing aside, was kind of retarded. I mean, Jamal basically becomes filthy rich and gets the girl not through hard work and dedication, but through ridiculous luck by just happening to learn the answer to every single question on a game show over the course of his life. I mean what are the odds? This **** makes Horatio Alger look provocative and insightful. I think the portraits of poverty made the script look more sophisticated than it was. Also, I didn't think there was much chemistry between Jamal and Latika. Thoughts?

I loved the movie and didn't find it pretentious at all. The main reason I think the movie worked was because Jamal never lost focus of what was important in life - love and loyalty and always trying to do the right thing no matter how hard it is. With no positive role models and many temptations it would have been easy for him to follow his brother's path, but his character and beautiful soul saved him from that fate. The ironic thing about him winning is he could care a less about the money which made it all the more meaningful. I think it is a wonderful message and the fact the movie highlights some real issues in India (which many are aware of but never "see") will hopefully help get people more involved in helping India and others like them. On a personal note, another reason I loved the movie and the character of Jamal is because he reminded me of my son who is not perfect but always tries to do the right thing. I taught him well...
