What should I start with first on teaching 10 yr old girls how to fastpitch?

I played softball and fastpitch for many years.I pitched fastpitch and I pitch in my co-ed softball team now. This is my first year as a pitching coach on my daughters fastpitch team. Some girls this is there first year and for most this is there 3rd year. But this is there 1st year for fastpitch. What should I start with first and what should I look for in a potential pitcher?I know the basics and how I was tought, but that was 20 years ago.Can someone help me?

Take this from an umpire! and a former coach.

First, teach them the basics of a legal pitch!

Bad habits are hard to break later on.

First work solely on the preliminaries such as taking the plate with the hands seperated, taking (or simulating taking) the sign from the catcher, bringing the hands together, stepping off rearward to dis-engage if she needs to, proper step and drag and such.

After that, then work on the stride, grip, and delivery. You are aiming for power here, so don't be too concerned with accuracy just yet.

When all that becomes a natural motion, then you can start working on hitting the target. Have her do snap drills into the fence (or net) for strength training, and repetition (muscle memory). Stay away from specialty pitches (drops, rise, curves etc) until she becomes natural with a straight fastball.

Be sure to also teach her what to do AFTER the pitch is delivered. She then becomes a fielder who is only 30' from the batter! She must be ready to catch, or dodge a shot back to her. She also needs to learn to pay attention to any runners on base, and how to properly use the lookback rule to her advantage.

The "perfect pitcher" will be 6' tall with about 5' of that legs! (huge stride), left handed, bench presses 250#, and one who is an arm wrestling champion! But........remember, a strong pitcher can dominate with fastballs in 10U, but as girls age, they will catch up to her. That is where pitch selection will be the "ace in the hole" for a good pitcher.

Really, desire will be the most important factor in choosing the pitcher. Many girls are capable, but won't exert the effort to become proficient.

Good luck, you may train the next Monica Abbot (although she is quite often illegal, but not called for it!).
