Chemistry concentration molarity help, please!?
An aspirin tablet weighing 0.596 g has been analyzed and contains 68.2 % ASA (180.16 g/mol) by mass. A student dissolved
the tablet in hot NaOH and the cooled solution was diluted with DI water to the mark in a 250 mL volumetric flask. Exactly 3.00 mL
of the solution was pipetted into a 100 mL volumetric flask and diluted to the mark with FeCl3 solution.
What is the concentration (in molarity) of the diluted solution?
0.596g is dissolved in 250 mL, and 3mL of that is used to make a 100mL solution. The amount (in grams) of the tablet in the final solution is:
(0.596g/250mL) * 3mL = 0.007152g
Only 68.2% of this is actually aspirin:
0.682 * 0.007152g = 0.004877664g
This is dissolved in 100mL. Molarity is calculated by moles per liter, so in a similar solution of 1L (1000mL):
0.004877664g * (1000mL / 100mL) = 0.04877664g
There are 180.16g/mol, so the final number of moles in a 1L solution, or the molarity of the solution, is:
0.04877664g / (180.16g/mol) = 0.000270740675M, or 0.2mM.
The method of dissolving the aspirin and the solution used for diluting it can be ignore here; they are not important to the final molarity of aspirin. However, this information is important for any future steps using the solution!
