what were alternates that were being considered when they named the Florida baseball team the Marlins?

Probably not many. Marlins had been the name of numerous minor league teams in Miami for decades before the MLB version. A quick look a Wikipedia yields...(pauses to look)...Oh, the Florida Flamingos. Well that would have been horrible.
