What language can we trace back to be the beggining of most if not all languages?
I'm learning greek, and subsequently am able to learn latin, and most other romantic languages quite well. Since I seem to have an ability to learn hard languages, can someone tell me what the furthest back language is? Or if there are more than one (an asian, a european, a Norwegian etc.) what are they?
It sounds like you're looking for a proto-language. The World Proto-Language (WPL) is the earliest language of this kind that is at all well-developed. It's thought to be the origin of all Indo-European languages, and this would include Greek and Latin. However, WPL is theoretical and so far removed from the languages spoken today that it would be of little help in learning them.
The prototype technique used to piece together WPL was also used to discover and standardize Interlingua. Unlike WPL, Interlingua is a contemporary language. So, you can use it to learn many modern languages such as the Romance languages, Russian, and German. Castellina found that people from diverse linguistic backgrounds can learn Interlingua in about a week. According to Gopsill, you can learn the Romance or Latin-based languages in about half the time after learning Interlingua. This was true for me, as I learned Interlingua in less than a week and then learned Spanish very quickly and easily. Interlingua will also help you to understand your own language better -- why words mean what they do, and so on.
A cautionary note: please don’t rely on the Wikipedia article on Interlingua. I found 8 errors in just the first paragraph. For accurate information in and about Interlingua, a good site is www.interlingua.com. Most university libraries also have the Interlingua-English Dictionary and the Interlingua Grammar.
