Spot Bilt What can I do to get my snow thrower engine to start?
We have a two year old snow thrower. Worked fine the first two years we used it (probably a total of 20 uses). We are expecting some snow over the next two days and I was doing a "dry run" today to make sure the equipment is working. We can't get it to start. My spouse and I disagree as to whether there was gas sitting in there all summer. We usually drain it but couldn't recall for sure (and we've already put fresh gas in it this morning). The spark plug looks fine. The key is in the ignition, choke and throttle in the correct spots.
We have an electric or manual start. I've tried both methods and neither is triggering it to start.
Are there any other fixes that I could investigate on my own? I'm not mechanically inclined so anything difficult will probably be beyond my capability.
The unit is a Troy Bilt with a Tecusmah (sp?) engine I believe.
Thanks.
There is something else to look at and is relatively easy even if you aren't mechanically inclined. There is a bowl on the bottom of the carburetor that can be removed with a screwdriver or small socket. Turn the gasoline valve off or crimp the rubber hose so the flow of gas into the carb is stopped. Remove the bowl and empty it out. What may have happened {after sitting for a season and you not being certain if you drained the gas before you stopped using the blower) is that water just settled into the bottom of the bowl and it is preventing the gas from burning. Once you've done that, remove the plug and pour a cap full of gas into the cylinder and then replace the plug. Turn the gas back on and start it as you would normally. It should fire right up.
