Are You Asa Resistant?

It is estimated that over 4 million people in Canada take acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) to prevent heart attacks and stroke. Recent studies, however, demonstrate that up to 25 percent of people who take this remedy may not benefit from its anti-clotting effects.

"The miracle of ASA is its ability to prevent blood clots from forming and that reduces the risk of heart attack or stroke," says Dr. Doug Tkachuk at LifeLabs, a leading diagnostic centre. "Unfortunately, there is growing clinical evidence that ASA does not have the same effect on everyone. Quite simply, some of us are resistant to its benefits.

"The good news is: a simple urine test can tell your doctor if ASA is doing what it should be doing for your blood. That's an important thing to know because medical studies have also shown that individuals who are ASA resistant may have a 3-time greater risk of cardiovascular-related death."

The role of ASA

Acetylsalicylic acid works by reducing the production of thromboxane, a chemical in the body that makes blood platelets sticky. This helps to prevent blood clots from forming, ensures blood flows freely and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. A low level of thromboxane in the urine means that the ASA is doing what it should. High levels of this biomarker may mean that your dosage is not effective and it's time to consult your physician about changing the dosage, or identifying an alternative therapy.

"If you're not sure, keep taking it, but do ask your doctor as soon as possible if you should be tested," Dr. Tkachuk adds. "Knowing the answer will not only give you peace of mind, it could end up saving your life."
