Several current managers used to be catcher. For instance:
Eric Wedge - Indians
Mike Scioscia - Angels
Joe Girardi - Yankees
Bob Geren - A's
Don Wakamatsu - Mariners
Bob Melvin - Diamondbacks
Joe Torre - Dodgers
Bruce Bochy - Giants
Simply, because, they know the game.
Catcher is the most important job on the field.
1. They call the game -- the pitches, locations, and alignments
2. They're the only players that can see the entire field
3. They have to know what's going on because they have so much tasks
Therefore, they have to be the smartest players on the field. In turn, they manage, because of their baseball knowledge.
