women's softball Sliders
Help me understand women's softball.?
First question is easy:
1. What is a designated player?
The second one might seem sexist, but that's no my intent:
2. I played baseball growing up, eventually making it to the minor leagues. I've seen pitches with all sorts of movement on them, from curve balls to sliders, knuckle balls, late breaks on two seamers, and even this one wicked splitter that I just avoided. Anyways, I hear the commentators talk about "rise" balls and "screw" balls but I see no movement and no change in speed. Can someone shed some light on this? Won't all pitches rise a little due to the underhanded delivery? What other pitches do softball players have. I want to get in the box against Jenny Finch and see these pitches for myself.
Thanks.
I believe that would be a hitter who doesn't field, like the DH. When softball pitchers throw a pitch, indeed it is the underhand delivery that creates the rise ball, but to create the screwball, you need to throw the pitch underhanded and the pitch rises and then breaks on the hitter making a very good pitch. The fastball is just a straight delivery so it doesn't have a backspin on the ball that is created when pitching the riseball.
